Development ofaMesospheric Sodium Laser Beacon for Atmospheric Adaptive Optics

چکیده
II We have developed laser sources ofsodium-resonance radiation based on the sumfrequency mixing ofNd:YAG laser radiation. The sources are suitable for generating a fluorescence spot in the earth's mesospheric sodium layer for use in adaptive optics compensation. Taking into account the sodium fluorescence lifetime, Doppler broadening, hyperfine structUre, radiative saturation, optical pumping, and radiation pressure, we can optimize the intensity of the fluorescence by using spectral and temporal tailoring of the laser radiation.

Bootstrap beacon creation for overcoming the effects of beacon anisoplanatism in a laser beam projection system.
We address the problem of using adaptive optics to deliver power from an airborne laser platform to a ground target through atmospheric turbulence under conditions of strong scintillation and anisoplanatism. We explore three options for creating a beacon for use in adaptive optics beam control: scattering laser energy from the target, using a single uncompensated Rayleigh beacon, and using a se...

A sodium guide star has been used to sense and correct atmospheric aberration during two runs at the Multiple Mirror Telescope (MMT). For the first run in 1993 May, the artificial star was created by a 0.5 W beam from a continuous-wave dye laser tuned to the D2 resonance line, projected from a telescope centered and coaxial with the main array of six 1.8 m mirrors. Scattering by the mesospheric...

Single sodium beacons will likely be the most convenient for adaptive systems to correct 6-10 m class telescopes over a small field of view (the isoplanatic angle), provided reliable, powerful 589 nm lasers become available and affordable. However, when adaptive optics are applied to extended fields of view and correction of telescopes as large as 32 m diameter, it seems likely that laser beaco...
متن کاملConcept for a laser guide beacon Shack-Hartmann wave-front sensor with dynamically steered subapertures.
We describe an innovative implementation of the Shack-Hartmann wave-front sensor that is designed to correct the perspective elongation of a laser guide beacon in adaptive optics. Subapertures are defined by the segments of a deformable mirror rather than by a conventional lenslet array. A bias tilt on each segment separates the beacon images on the sensor's detector. One removes the perspectiv...
متن کاملAnisoplanatism in Adaptive Optics Compensation of a Focused Beam Using Distributed Beacons
In systems that achieve laser beam propagation through atmospheric turbulence by phase compensation with adaptive optics, the performance depends on the beacon’s spatial distribution. A formulation is obtained to calculate the anisoplanatic Strehl ratio of a phase compensated, focused beam for any beacon distribution and turbulence profile. Analytic results are obtained for several beacon geome...
